I love to dig!

Yesterday I got the chance to be a part of the archeological dig at Fort Hunter. The State Museum Commission is trying once again to find remains of the old 1750’s fort that was on that sight. Over the years I’ve been a vlounteer on digs at the Ephrata Cloister as well as previous Fort Hunter projects. As an amature historian it can be an opportunity to touch history first hand. It’s also a great way to dive into the life of those who lived before us.

As we dug yesterday (still in the early stages of a month long project) two finds we made. One find (and the most significant of the day) was an 18th century coin dated 1724. Here’s a picture of the same coin:

The second was one I made, I found part of a 19th century toy cannon offering a clue to the time period we were looking at in the area where I was digging. Clues like this are vital and provide markers as the project continues on.

Anyone can visit and if you’d like to volunteer to dig the professionals who are at Fort Hunter will give you a bit of training and set you to digging too. All I can say is, it’s a lot of fun and incredibly rewarding.

Book Review

Alright…I have been reading at my usual pace but, I’ve not been posting my thoughts of what I’ve read or am currently reading. So, here goes.
First, let me say that if you’re not reading the Bible everyday you are totally missing out on the number one best seller of all time. Read it!!!. I read a chapter from Romans every morning as a part of my morning devotions. When I get to the end of the book I turn back to chapter one and start all over. I have read through Romans over 14 times now this year.

I have recently read “Comon Sense” by Glenn Beck. His point was well made that the United States is far from where our founding fathers intended us to be and we are moving closer and closer to a socialist society. He goes back to president’s W.Wilson and FDR and points to the progression of our nation away from the founding father’s plans. He is very descriptive of the problem but I found that he is not very prescriptive. He only suggests that we need to do all we can to stop this move toward socialism and the eventual downfall of our nation. He suggests rally’s, letter writing and voting as ways to protest and move our nation back to it origins. Not a bad read and insightful.

I finished “Uncommon” Tony Dunge. It was a fantastic read! I highly recommend it, especially to young men who are sports fans. He points out faith, personal responsibility and living out your calling in the world. He highlights the lack of respect and self control that exists in pro sports and his efforts to combat the lack of discipline. He writes very well and I found his down to earth style that levels a solid punch with every word to be refreshing.

I am currently reading “The Shack” by Wm. Paul Young. I have been totally sucked into this book. I am having a hard time putting it down. If I had a extra hour today I’d finish it. I am fully enjoying the open and unique dialogue between God and the main character. It has reminded me to talk to God more often and to listen even more. My on prayerr life has been drawn back to a deeper, more conversational style that has me leaping for joy and sailing in His arms.

Lastly, I am reading “Church Unique” by Will Mancini. It’s a greeat book that talks about moving a church more toward being vision driven in all they do. I’m only half way through so I can’t say a whole lot about it yet but, so far it’s pretty darn good.

Rev Serry Joins the Church of Heaven

First, let me say sorry about not posting as often as I should. I was away for several days in the Lakee Chauttaqua region of New York. It was wonderful stayiing with friends at the Chauttaqua Institute during “History Week.” We enjoyed first person reenactors from Colonial Williamsburg as we as great speakers. I got my copies of 1776 and John Adams personally signed by David McCulough. Julie and I had a great time of rest, intellectual stimulations and napping.

During our time away we got notified that Rev. GT Serry has passed away. His body and soul finally gave in to a long run with several serious illnesses. He is a great man, a great leader and will be deeply missed in the church/village of Maboleh, Sierra Leone.

Please pray for his family and the church in our sister village of Maboleh. May God bless all that Rev Serry began and may those who follow, pick up the task and vision and run the race with passion and the Holy Spirit.
